General Bellacourt
“I expect a little dignity from my catastrophes.”
Bellacourt brings a carefully arranged dignity to every occasion and expects the occasion to make an effort in return. The silver bun, formal jacket and exact expression suggest that even bad news could improve its presentation. An interruption is a discourtesy; an inconvenient result ought at least to arrive politely. Beneath the rebukes is a recognizable wish to remain composed while events become unreasonable. Bellacourt will accept a necessary compromise once it has been described with sufficient consideration.
